Post-Independence Day 2020: Tech Giants that are Aiming for Atmanirbhar BharatOn May 12, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his nation about an economic package to tide over the Coronavirus crisis under the name ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. ‘Atmanirbhar’ means self-reliance. He said that the economic package would play an important role in making India self-reliant and that it was the only way to make the 21st century belong to India.

The focal point of the concept of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ is to make the nation self-reliant by focusing on local manufacturers and service providers. This will not only strengthen the economy, but also improve the standard of living, and most importantly improve the trade deficit of the country.

The ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission came at a backdrop when India decided to boycott Chinese products. This saw the rise of many startup and tech. communities participate in the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

Fast forward three months, India’s 74th Independence Day has just been concluded on Saturday, with PM Narendra Modi addressing the nation from Red Fort as per the customs.   We take a look at some of the tech giants that have already started to empower PM Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’:

Paytm

Paytm is India’s largest digital payment platform with a monthly active user base of 140 million. One of Paytm’s unique feature is that it can handle up to 5000 transactions per second. 

 Recently Paytm launched an ‘All-in-One QR’ across the country that has enabled merchants in any states to accept unlimited payments through Paytm Wallet, Rupay Cards and all UPI based payment apps directly into their bank account at 0% fee. This innovative offering has empowered Paytm merchant partners to transfer payments instantly into any bank account at any time.

ShopClues

ShopClues is a Gurugram-based online marketplace that has over 2500 merchants spread across India locally manufacturing their products and selling it in the online platform.

ShopClues recently introduced an ‘Atmanirbhar’ section on its platform that sells locally made products across categories ranging from fashion, footwear, jewellery, all the way to, home & kitchen and electronic appliances. ShopClues has also started to add ‘Made in India ‘badges on all locally made products as part of its ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative. 

Bankit

Bankit is a Noida-based Fintech startup helping people get easy access to basic banking facilities and financial services in a seamless manner. Bankit has been spearheading the Indian fintech revolution in India by creating entrepreneurial opportunity by appointing business correspondents or agents. There are over 1 lakh active self-employed agents already working with Bankit, and over the last couple of months have onboarded 5000 plus agents under its vision ‘Millionaire Agents Network’.

Shef

Shef is a unique Mumbai-based food-tech startup platform for chefs. In addition to that, the platform empowers women, local chef and supports small scale food businesses.

At present, due to the lockdown situation, Shef has joined hands with around 200 home chefs who has everything to offer to the customers from fresh food to spicy dishes. The startup has plans to expand its services to 5 more cities and onboard more than 1000 home chefs by the end of the year.
